As groovy as it gets
The jam in Dancing is quintissential early pyschedelia. This show must have been a real blast, and very edgy for it's time.

God I love these guys
Yes, this is no frills, bare to the bones, no special effects, sixties rock n' roll. Turn it up really loud and it makes you feel really good. They sound more driven than any punk rock band I ever heard. I don't what it is, but lately, the last few months, I have found an enormous amount of solace and satisfaction in these early recordings. Thanks for posting...

July 17, 1966
Someone else had mentioned this, but this is clearly identical to the recording listed for July 17, 1966. Assuming that recording is known to be associated with that known performance date, and given this date is not thought to have occurred, that kind of explains the mystery... (

Drums
Billy tears Cream Puff War a new asshole. This is no frills Grateful Dead. A guitar, plugged directly into an amp, with nothing in between. Who the fuck does that anymore?

Venue?
The poster for the Fillmore that week lists Big Brother, Quicksilver and the Jaywalkers, bun no Dead. Does anyone have any theories as to possible alternate venues?

They were on this night
I've never written a review before, but I must say after listening to many '66 shows, the boys were really on this night. It's a shame that the date and location, as well as this being only a partial of the show--as well as the brutal cut in dancin'--is all we have; but what we do have is a great example of why people liked these guys. In spite of the drawbacks, I have to recommend a listen. Enjoy what's here.

Scott Alan has compared this recording to the July 17th source provided by Charlie Miller, and has identified that they are two different sources of the same performance, as he describes in the comments at

primordial dank 1966 gd-nug
Haha, its so nice to find a clean sounding show, especially if its as vintage as this one. Like a flawless gem, this show is flawless, the playing is tight and unlike anything i've heard them perform later. Hell, its just plain awesome.
p.s., the king bee will melt you ;)
